Kim Dongwan was always a group artist, a Shinhwa
artist. As an actor, he worked in several shows and movie, but as a
singer he always said he belonged to something bigger, to Shinhwa. But
in 2007 he decided to fly soo. Considering the fans call, Dongwan also
had to face the military enlistment coming and the time Shinhwa would be
apart. It was time to make more.
It was in 2007, july, after a few months delay, that Kim Dongwan released his first solo album, kimdongwan is,
with the curious labeled track as single, Handkerchief. The song - a
balad - came out as a success, and the album was against a few not so
optmistic perspectives, topping for several weeks the charts in
Hottracks and Hanteo. Yes, many people thought it was risky for Kim
Dongwan to come solo with a full album; it would be safer if he released
a single first. But he did it very well, and his first album was very
successful.
Still in 2007, he released the repack edition for his
first album containing the song Handkerchief in remix and the non
released Listen... for Shinhwachangjo, the song he wrote for his fans.
In 2008 Kim Dongwan had to face a lot of work, dealing with Shinhwa and
his new solo career. It was still in the end of 2007 that Shinhwa
performed in China and Japan, in a small tour called "Shinhwa Forever".
It was the "end" of Shinhwa, those where the last performances they
would do before enlistment. In the beginning of 2008 Kim Dongwan
expected to release his second solo album, but Shinhwa's 9th jib
recording and the Korean last concerts to celebrate Shinhwa's 10th
anniversary only allowed him to end his solo recordings in may.
The Secret; Between Us came very
different. Versatile, the album has various styles - passing through the
ballads that filled the first album, the electronica and the grand beat
- and it doesn't have too many duets or features. We can have enough
(?) of Kim Dongwan's voice, which is better than ever. The title track,
The Secret, is an electronic beat that surprised even the most dedicated
fans.
For the repack edition, Kim Dongwan picked a balad for title track, A Man's Love, and released in 2008, july,The Secret; part II.
The news were the tracks Regret, unreleased, and Goodbye's Call, a duet
with JaeSeok (Wanted), which was already released before in his album.
For his goodbye, in the days before his enlistment, Kim Dongwan released an album-single, Promise,
highlighting the expected melancholy. Preparing himself - and his fans -
to be 26 months apart from the show business, the two songs - Promise
and Can't Forget - are filled with pain, sadness and promises of return.
The first one is a duet with YunHa, and the second is a piano-voice
ballad that scored making everybody crying.
